ELECTRIC

temp elect We had to apply and pay for a permit at the local planning department. Luckily they provided us with information about installing a temporary service. Papers in hand we visited the electric company.
They handed us a form to fill out. I started the process but was quickly stumped when they wanted details about the dwelling that would eventually be constructed. Was the home to be stick built or manufactured? How many bathrooms? How many bedrooms? Would the primary source of heat be electric? Would there be a fireplace or wood stove? Would there be air conditioning? We hadn't decided any of these things. I explained this to the lady but she refused to continue until we had answered all the questions on the form. My frustration started all over again. Midge suggested we leave and talk things over. She knew any minute now I was going to be in jail. Ha! Ha! She probably was right.

We left and sat in the car talking. I expressed my concerns and frustration. She suggested I let her handle this. "SURE ! " I said and she went back inside. What could she do that I couldn't? About 15 minutes later she came back outside and got in the car. She had that look on her face. You know the one all women have that means "I told you so". Don't you hate it when a woman has that look? She had arranged everything. She had just put her best guess on the forms.

temp2 The electric company engineer was to meet us the next day, at the property, to select where they would install their pole and make arrangements to get the job done. The next day the engineer arrived as scheduled and was very helpful. He explained what i would need to install for them to do their connection. We decided on where their electric pole would be placed. The pole would be installed in 2 days and if I had my temporary service ready they would connect it. We both knew this couldn't be done until the state electric inspector approved my installation but I would try and have everything done as soon as possible.
epl1 We had met a couple here in Oregon and they let us borrow the temporary service box. Now all we needed was a pole to hang it on. The pole would have to be about 20 foot tall to allow construction vehicles to pass under the wires. We dug the 4 foot deep hole and searched for a pole. The pole was 24 foot long and must have weighed 200 pounds. We made several attempts to set it but the pole still was on the ground.
epl2 I arranged for a tow truck to lift the pole and we managed to get it set. I installed the service box and weatherhead on the post and contacted the state electrical inspector. The electric company showed up as they said and started their work. I was amazed to watch the men scurry up and down those poles. They set their pole and ran the wires. Unfortunatelty the state inspector hadn't been out yet so we couldn't connect power today. The state inspector arrived and gave me the coveted green sticker. I recontacted the electric company and they were out shortly to finish the connection. WOW ! We had electric.

Hate those forms, so i'll read on
